Experience Fall in Lodi
Welcome to harvest season in Lodi, America's Favorite Small Town. Pumpkins appear throughout the community, farm stands overflow with fall produce, and seasonal sweets arrive on menus across town. Cooler weather, local bites and sips, and vineyards dressed in autumn color make fall one of the most rewarding seasons for a Lodi visit. Here’s what to know while planning your trip.
Why Visit Lodi Wine Country in Fall?
- Harvest is underway. Wineries are lively, grapes are arriving, and the distinctive scent of fermenting fruit signals the season throughout Lodi.
- Temperatures become more comfortable. Summer heat gives way to warm afternoons and cool evenings—the ideal conditions for patio time.
- The vineyards change color. Vines shift through gold, orange, and deep red, adding beauty to drives between wineries.
- Seasonal flavors are everywhere. Enjoy spiced cocktails, warm flights, harvest menus, comfort food, and sweet treats in addition to wine.
- The events calendar gets busy. Festivals, winery gatherings, outdoor dinners, and other seasonal activities create a festive atmosphere.
- There is more time to linger. As the summer rush eases, fall invites visitors to enjoy a long lunch, settle into a patio table, and turn a visit into a full weekend.

See the Sandhill Cranes
From early November through early March, thousands of Sandhill Cranes spend winter in Lodi, roosting in the wetlands around the region. These seasonal visitors remain for a while rather than simply passing through. At sunset, watch them return to their roosts as their calls fill the sky and their wings reflect the day’s final light.
Paid tours: Visitors seeking expert commentary and access to prime viewing areas can reserve a Sandhill Crane Tour with a docent.
Free viewing areas:
- Woodbridge Ecological Reserve
- Staten Island (The Nature Conservancy)
Sandhill Crane Viewing Tips
- Arrange your viewing around sunset, when the largest numbers of cranes return to the wetlands. It is worth planning an entire evening around the experience.
- Bring binoculars and a camera. Both help with close observation even when the birds remain at a distance.
- Carry rain gear later in the season. September and October are usually dry, while Lodi typically sees its first rain in November. An umbrella, rain boots, and a raincoat are sensible choices.
