Overview
A peaceful natural refuge awaits at Cosumnes River Preserve in California’s Central Valley. Located a short drive from downtown Lodi, the 50,000-acre preserve protects one of the area’s last free-flowing rivers along with a rich variety of ecosystems.
Birders, hikers, and visitors looking for quiet time outdoors can explore ancient oaks, seasonal wetlands, scenic trails, and tranquil sloughs. Sandhill cranes, herons, and over 250 bird species can be seen here, making the preserve a year-round destination for birdwatching.
More than a woodland walk, a visit offers the opportunity to reconnect with the landscape, enjoy the fresh Delta air, and observe nature’s seasonal rhythms close to home.
For the strongest wildlife-viewing opportunities and memorable photography, local advice is to arrive in the early morning or during golden hour. Bring water and sturdy shoes.
