Ride the Delta to Sacramento, Then Return by Train

USA

53 Miles Through California History

This 53-mile route travels through the story of California.

The Sacramento and the San Joaquin, the state’s two major rivers, meet in the Delta. Before freeways and flight apps, riverboats dominated these waterways as California’s first mass transit system. Sacramento eventually became the western end of the Transcontinental Railroad, while the rail connection to Lodi belongs to that same historic corridor linking Sacramento with the San Francisco Bay just months after the Golden Spike was driven at Promontory in 1869.

After railroad construction ended, thousands of Chinese laborers remained to construct many of the levees and roads used on this ride. Their legacy continues in the small river communities scattered along the route.

An early start will give you plenty of time to enjoy this piece of old California. Although the terrain is flat, Delta winds can be unpredictable, so account for them when setting your pace. If you plan to take the train back, timing is important. Amtrak’s San Joaquin Train 704 leaves Sacramento at 4:55 pm and reaches Lodi at 5:33 pm. Tickets can be purchased online or at the Sacramento depot; buying onboard includes a hefty surcharge. Bicycles ride free, just roll them on.

Possible stops include Panaderia Primo’s Bakery, Walnut Grove, and Holland Market. Each offers a chance to refuel and pause along the way.

History, fresh air, and—if luck is on your side—a tailwind make this a memorable day out.
